Poinsettias 2009

As most of you know, Visser's Florist and Greenhouses has been selling quality poinsettias since the 1950s. People (and churches and businesses and schools) keep coming back year after year to get their order.

Well, I am pleased to announce that even in this economic recession/depression we are still selling them like crazy. However, something interesting is happening this year. We are selling out of all the big plants, the 8 inch and 10 inch plants, faster than the smaller ones. Yes, I know that the big ones are unbelievably impressive, but we assumed people would go a little smaller this year.

I guess quality matters, even when things are tough.

By the way, we still have a few big poinsettias left so if you hurry you won't be left out.

New style roses

visser's roses
This is pretty interesting. We were asked by a company to put together several dozen roses to hand out as awards. The only thing was they wanted something a little different. We put on our thinking caps and this is what we came up with: The long stemmed red roses are enhanced by seeded eucalyptus. hypericum berries and ti leaves. Needless to say, the company loved the design.

halloween flowers

It's Halloween--
At Visser's, it's the time to let our designers go crazy--and they love it. Here are a couple of pictures of what we have come up with this year.

The bottom picture is an email special we are running with a couple of pumpkin arrangements. The top picture is something that Yolanda came up with just being whimsical. Pretty cute huh?

By the way, if you want to get in on our email specials, just call the shop and we will put you on the list. There are some really good deals offered only to the people on the list.

Bosses' Day

bosses day flowers
It's tough being a boss. A lot of hours, stress and responsibility, not to mention those three martini lunches.

That's why Visser's Florist and Greenhouses in Anaheim is proud to celebrate bosses' day. It's a good opportunity to give a little present to your boss to show him or her how much they are appreciated. And, let's face it, a little sucking up never hurt anybody.

Visser's has just the right gift for the occasion--a custom made blooming plant garden. We can make them for any amount over $20.00 and they are sure to please even the most finicky of bosses. The one in the picture above is only $29.99. It's a small price to pay to show your appreciation.

Fall flowers are here

Visser's fall flowers
Gudrun, Visser's Florist & Greenhouse design manager, has done it again. She created this fall beauty that we put out as our weekly Email special. For the next three days this masterpiece is only $19.99.

It is only available for store pick-up or local delivery as no other flowershop will match our prices.

We don't usually announce our email specials but we are really excited about this one. If you aren't on our special email list (and shame on you) you can still get one by calling us at (714) 772-9900.

Fruit and Flowers

Today is an interesting day. There is a fresh fruit and flower show at the Anaheim Convention Center. Visser's Florist was chosen by several of the exhibitors to provide fruit/floral accents. While some of them just wanted our beautiful flowers, a lot wanted fruit and flower combinations.

We love it when we get requests for different types of arrangements. This is one of the fruit/flower arrangements we came up with.
ALERT - BREAKING NEWS!! The booth that ordered this arrangement won first place on the booth decorating contest--partially because of our fruit/flower arrangement. A BIG thanks to Gudrun Martinez, our head designer who created this beauty. It's too bad my picture taking skills don't match her design skills.

Fall at Visser's Florist

Fall is here. OK, technically fall starts next Tuesday in the Northern Hemisphere, but at Visser's Florist in Anaheim we just couldn't wait.

For us it means that more flower arrangements are using fall colors, orange, yellow and brown. If you are from the East coast where the leaves actually change colors, it's a wonderful time of the year.

We have decorated our windows and store to match the festive mood of the season. Come on in and see for yourself.

Indian Independence Day 2009

indian independence flowers
As some of you may know, August 15 is Indian Independence Day. India, in terms of people, is the biggest democracy in the world. It is also relatively new, gaining independence in 1947.

Every year, Anaheim City Councilman Harry Sidhu and his wife Gin open their Yorba Linda house to a giant celebration commemorating the event. AND, once again they called on Visser's Florist and Greenhouses to provide the flowers for the party.

The flower arrangements were all done in Orange, White and Green--the colors of the Indian flag. It was really a fun time. Like always, there were dancers, singers and other entertainment, and lots of indian food. Like always, I ate way too much.

Biker Sympathy Flowers

motorcycle flowers
We received a rather unusual request at Visser's Florist yesterday. A gentleman wanted us to re-create the front wheel of a motorcycle for a friend who recently died.

We did it and I think it turned out really nice!

Wedding Centerpiece

wedding centerpiece
Another winner from Visser's Florist & Greenhouses in Anaheim. This wedding centerpiece is a sample for an upcoming wedding. This stunning arrangement is created from Vendella and Pink roses and white hydrangea, with orchids submerged in the vase.

Needless to say, the bride-to-be was completely overwhelmed by it. The wedding will feature several of these centerpieces, as well as other complementing flowers and arrangements throughout the room. This will surely be a wedding day to remember.

Anaheim Plant Rental

Just got done delivering a big truckload of rental plants to the Anaheim Convention Center. I know I've said it before, but plants make such a wonderful difference in the look of a space. It's like they bring it to life, without detracting from the main focus of the area.

This convention is going to be held every year in Anaheim, and they decided to use Visser's Florist and Greenhouses for their plant rental. The benefits to them are clear: Beautiful plants at a reasonable price; no hassle delivery and pick-up when the convention is over; AND Visser's shows up during the convention to water the plants and keep them looking great.

So, whether you are a big event company, renting a small booth at a convention, or having any size meeting in the Anaheim or Orange County area, please call us at 714 772-9900. You won't be sorry.

Cheap Plants

I just thought I'd take a minute to remind you that Visser's Florist & Greenhouses has two 3,000 square foot greenhouses full of beautiful plants.

Let's face it, during this time of economic uncertainty, we all have to tighten our belts a bit. That's where Visser's comes in. Plants make wonderful gifts, and we have hundreds of beautiful plants starting at less than $5.00. In fact, we probably have 300 plants in the "under $5.00 range". In addition, we have all sorts of plants and trees in other price ranges.

It's worth it to come in and take a look. If nothing else, strolling through our greenhouses will be the happiest 15 minutes of your whole day. Don't you owe it to yourself?

Rejuvenating Hydrangea

I learned a cool tip from watching a flower video lately. It has to do with hydrangea and how it sometimes wilts and dies prematurely. You can SOMETIMES fix it by doing the following:

Dip the head in cool water for a few minutes. Then cut the stem off a pretty good amount--say 3" if you can. Then, place the stem in HOT water for a couple of hours. Usually, it will come back to life and look very close to what it was. Give it a try!

Thanks to the Floral Design Institute for the tip. Here is the complete video.

Sansevieria cylindrical (Snake Plant)

snake plant
Looking for a plant that is unusual and easy to care for—maybe for Father’s Day? Why not try this little gem? It’s a succulent, originating in Angola. It’s pretty easy to see why it has the name Snake Plant. The “leaves” are cylindrical and grow up to 5 feet long.

It is very easy to take care of. In the Summer it should be watered once every couple of months. In the winter, maybe once every three or four months. It does best indoors with very little water. The plant does flower, usually once a year, and the flowers are quite fragrant, but it is the unusual beauty of the leaves that attracts most people to this plant.

Why not add a little diversity to your indoor plant collection? Visser’s Florist & Greenhouses sells this beauty for $9.99. Come on in and pick one up today.

Mad Hatter Flowers Part II

Here is the picture of the bunny that went with the Mad Hatter Flowers from Visser's yesterday. Tell me this doesn't look like the bunny that you had when you were a kid.

Mad Hatter Baby Shower Flowers

OMG, this is absolutely the cutest! We designed 7 of these arrangements for a Mad Hatter themed baby shower. Giant Teacups filled with all sorts of whimsical stuff--and made of orchids, gerbera daiseys, roses, lilies and lisianthus.

Just goes to show you that whatever you need in the world of flowers, Visser's Florist and Greenhouses is the place to call.

Plus, you get a free plant with any plant purchase. Talk about a compelling deal. So, come on in tomorrow and stock up for summer. 701 W. Lincoln Ave. in Anaheim, 2 blocks west of Harbor Blvd. You won't be sorry.

Graduation Leis

graduation lei
It's June again, time for graduations. For a florist, that means one thing--tropical leis.

Technically, lei is hawaiian for garland. It can be any flower or natural material strung together and worn around the neck. In Southern California, the most popular leis are made from dendrobian orchids, either in purple or white.

The recommended way to wear a lei is around the shoulders, draping it in the front and the back. Also, it is typical to give the recipient a kiss on the cheek when presenting the lei.

As you might guess, Visser's Florist and Greenhouses is a great place to buy your graduation leis. We have dendrobian leis starting at $39.99. They are a great little gift for your graduate. Call us today at (714) 772-9900 or stop by the shop.

Aralia (Ming Stump)

Ming stump
Here at Visser’s Florist and Greenhouses, we are on a never-ending quest to find new and interesting plants that can be sold to the public at our famously low prices. Our newest find is an Aralia, called the Ming Stump (technically a polyscias fruticosa).

The plant has an Asian, tropical look to it, almost like a bonsai on steroids. The specimens offered by Visser’s are approximately 24” – 30” tall. The Ming Stump variety in the picture above sells for $10.99. There is also another variety, more exotic with round leaves that sells for $23.99.

Like all Aralias, with a bit of care these plants can last a long time indoors, up to 10 years or more. They should be kept in a light, easy draining soil, and not over-watered. In fact, over-watering is the most common reason these plants die. If the leaves start falling off, you may be watering the plant too much. Also, they make a nice table plant, but be sure that they get sufficient light.
At the current prices, Visser’s is not going to be able to keep them in stock very long. Come on down today and get one for yourself.

Tulips – the springtime wonders

tulips
Tulips are sometimes called the kittens of the flower world, mainly because they are cute and playful. Take them home and put them on a shelf and in a day or so they will all bend towards the light. Turn the vase around and they will point the other way out.

Here’s another interesting fact. Tulips drink lots of water. So, if you have tulips and they look a little droopy, they are probably just thirsty. Cut of the stems about one inch from the bottom, put them in fresh water and voila! they will come back to life.

Finally, here’s the best fact. Visser’s Florist and Greenhouses is having a 3 day super sale on tulips. For the amazing price of $30 you can have 14 tulips in a vase, delivered to your door. That’s right, $30.00 tax and delivery included. This deal ends Thursday so don’t delay. This super sale is only good for our Orange County customers since other florists have a tough time matching our prices. Call us today at (714) 772-9900.

Wedding Flower Bailout

silk centerpiece
Visser's Florist and Greenhouses, the largest flowershop in Orange County, once again saved the day. A bride to be came in and said that she was on a very tight budget, but needed several centerpieces for her upcoming wedding. She tried other florists but nobody could really help her.

She wanted something with an Asian influence, very simple and springlike. We came up with these silk flower arrangements for only $25.oo each. Well, needless to say, she loved them.

Visser's to the rescue.

St. Jude's new tower

St. Jude Medical Center is set to open its new Southwest Tower two days after Valentine's Day. On Monday, February 16 the tower, which purportedly costs $125 million will open to the public.

It will offer maternity and other services in a state of the art environment.

The reason I bring this up is because Visser's Florist delivers to St. Judes almost every single day. If you know someone who will be in St. Judes for a few days, why not send them some beautiful flowers or a nice plant from Visser's.

Valentine's Day Flowers

There is exactly one week until Valentine's Day. Now is the time to order your sweety's flowers--from Visser's Florist of course!

Something to think about--Valentine's Day is on a Saturday. That means you have to decide whether to have the flowers delivered to work--on Thursday or Friday, or have them sent to the home on Saturday.

Personally, I like sending them to work, usually two days before Valentine's Day. That would be Thursday this year. Let's face it, a big part of receiving flowers is letting other people know that someone thinks you're special. If your sweety gets flowers at work on Thursday, she (or he) will be one of the first to get them and will be the envy of her coworkers. And needless to say, that will be great news for you!

So, what are you waiting for? Get on the phone, dial (714) 772-9900, or jump on our website http://www.vissersflowers.com/. We will take care of the rest.

Oh and by the way, in recognition of the tough economic times, our prices are the same or lower than last year.

Plants are healthy

Visser's plants
At Visser's Florist, we have always believed that having plants around is a good thing. Now there's proof. A SCIENTIFIC study was just published that says putting plants in hospital rooms after a patient's surgery actually helps recovery. WOW!

This is big news. What it means is that if you know someone that has just had surgery, buy them a beautiful plant or european garden from Visser's and show them you really care about their health.

And, just a friendly reminder, hospital rooms are pretty small so send something of the appropriate size. Come into Visser's today and we'll be happy to help you.
